About This Spot

Stepping into Lena’s Cafe feels like receiving a warm invitation to slow down and savor the familiar comforts of a family table. Nestled in the heart of Altoona, this Italian restaurant gently hums with a steady, welcoming pace—steady enough for a relaxed weekday lunch or a busy family dinner. The atmosphere carries a quiet buzz, filled with friendly exchanges and the reassuring clatter of plates, all unfolding beneath soft, unhurried lighting.

Here, the heart of the experience lies in honest, home-style Italian cooking that never rushes its flavors. You might find yourself drawn to the hearty aroma of breaded veal parmesan simmering alongside a rich marinara or the delicate pull of gnocchi, tender and pillowy on the tongue. The meals feel substantial, made for sharing—and for those moments when conversation stretches as comfortably as the meal itself. Crisp salads dressed in house-made Italian dressing and warm, crusty bread arrive as simple but essential companions, grounding every bite in a sense of thoughtful care.

Lena’s is that sort of place where everyone knows that what ends up on your plate began with tradition, patience, and a bit of family pride. It’s not glossed up for impressing, but rather filled with genuine flavors and generous portions that invite friends and families to gather. The casual rhythm of service, friendly yet efficient, allows you to settle into the experience without distraction—whether it’s a packed Friday afternoon or a quieter weekday escape.

The real charm here is in how the space and the kitchen come together to make you feel comfortably at home, even if you’re just passing through. It’s in those passing smiles, the easy familiarity of a good sauce worth taking home, and the simple joy of a meal crafted with care and integrity. Lena’s Cafe offers more than just Italian fare; it offers a place where enduring flavors and timeless moments quietly meet.

$75 to try pretty a lot on the menu and enough to feed 4 adults plus three kids easily. Done in under a half hour at supper time. Prompt service, great food. Family owned.

Great little gem in Altoona. The meatballs are incredible. Homemade noodles are great too. Prices were more than reasonable. Would definitely be back.

Always try and find a local eatery when traveling. Great authentic Italian food. 5 star!

Food was fine. Stuffed shells were good. The bread is good. The salads are good with house Italian dressing. Their sauce is great, with a little sweetness. Their meatballs are eh soso. Service is fine. Get sauce to go. I've been here more than a few times. The sauce is what makes it. The lasagna has too much cheese and needs meat or something else added. It is a little boring as is, to me...but still tasty.

On a Friday afternoon the place was packed, but our waitress Lexi was professional and cheerful. We ordered the veal parmesan, fried fish and chicken salad. All was very good and in generous portions. The bread is a great addition to the meal;)

Wheelchair accessible through back door. Use the bread to sop up every last bit of spaghetti sauce. Dessert: coconut cream pie and Love cake

This past weekend we were in Altoona and wanted to grab some dinner before heading back home. We came upon Lena's Cafe. The place definitely had a local hometown favorite vibe. Hubby and I were disappointed that no drink menu was offered, but I was able to get a glass of wine. We both took advantage of the bread that was brought to the table, not warm or anything special but definitely fresh and we were both pretty hungry! We ordered appetizers, I had the fried mozzarella, my Husband had the fried eggplant, both were delicious and served piping hot, but what we really loved was the marinara served with! It was a fresh tasting very tomato forward sauce, yum! I had the crab cake salad for entree and it was tasty, my husband enjoyed his cheesesteak hoagie. Nothing fancy about the place, but the food was good and the place was packed as we were leaving.

One of my favorite places to eat! The food is absolutely delicious and the dessert is even better. It's the perfect home cooked meal without all the work!
